Graham Cracker Gingerbread House

A gingerbread house is a novelty confectionery shaped like a building that is made of gingerbread dough, cut and baked into appropriate components like walls and roofing, thought to be a symbol of family and home. It has been suggested that these edible structures originated in Germany between the 16th and 18th centuries. The trend for gingerbread houses must have spread to Britain at some point during the nineteenth century.

In 2013, a group in Bryan, Texas, US, broke the Guinness World Record set the previous year for the largest gingerbread house with one that had an internal volume of 1,110.1 m³ (39,201.8 ft³), raising money for St Joseph’s Hospital to build a new trauma centre. It was made of 1,800lbs of butter, 7,200 eggs and 7,200lbs of flour! WOW!

If, like me, you find yourself overwhelmed at the prospect of making your very own gingerbread house during the festive season then worry no longer! Making a gingerbread house is no simple task, however, this is a super simple way to make your very own mini gingerbread house without needing to spend hours baking and glueing yourself to your kitchen with royal icing and melted sugar. Here we go:

Supplies:

  • Graham cracker squares (or the British equivalent digestive biscuits)
  • Icing
  • Candies
  • Sprinkles
  • Mini candy canes
  • Paper plate
  • Piping bags
  • Plastic knife
  • Ice cream cone
  • Green icing

Directions:

  1. Build the base of the graham cracker house on the paper plate. Use icing in a piping bag to secure the four graham cracker squares down to the plate, and use icing to secure the sides together.
  2. Place the graham crackers on the top of the house and make the roof secure with icing.
  3. Carefully use a knife to cut out two triangles to fill in the holes under the roofing area and secure with icing.
  4. Use icing, candy, and sprinkles around the house and decorate! Then, display!
