Review: Breakfast at Sainsbury’s

There are some lazy weekends when I enjoy a nice lay in and rather than scurrying around my own kitchen looking for something tasty to put together for breakfast my husband and I will go out. Now there are lots of places in London to get a good brunch, but for someone on a budget there are fewer options.

Having lived in south east London for some time we have gotten to know the area quite well, at New Cross Gate there is a large Sainsbury’s with a Café where we sometimes pop in at the weekend for something to eat. We recently decided to do just that and I wanted to share the experience with you.

The Sainsbury’s Café offers a range of breakfast and main meals including Fairtrade coffee, British meat and child-friendly menu options. Happily they also offer vegetarian options which is an important factor for me!

It was simple to choose and order our meal from the counter, the staff being friendly and helpful, and in return we received a number to display on our table. We stocked up on condiments and waited a perhaps 5-10 minutes for our breakfasts to arrive.

Vlad had gone for the ‘big breakfast’ which included fried egg, 2 sausages, 2 rashers of bacon, mushroom, fresh tomato, baked beans and chips – all this for £4.25 I went for the similar but vegetarian friendly version which included 2 fried eggs, meat-free sausages, fresh tomato, baked beans and chips mine came to a very good value £3.40.

I am not going to say that the meal was as glamorous as some other restaurants or café, however, our breakfast was hearty and well cooked – just what we needed. The service was friendly and efficient and we were happy with our experience. I award the Sainsbury’s Café a 4 out of 5 stars, for offering us a simple but delicious breakfast for fantastic value – coming to around £10 for the two meals and drinks.
