Review: Silent Pool Gin

There are a few perks of being a blogger that I really love. One of them is getting the chance to try and review some amazing products, and today I am going to tell you all about Silent Pool Gin who kindly set me a bottle of their signature spirit for me to try.

Silent Pool was the brainchild of two Surrey locals who decided to take inspiration from Scottish whisky distilleries and use those techniques to make a truly sustainable distillery next to a freshwater source. The distillery now produces handcrafted, artisan spirits using locally sourced ingredients.

The distillers at Silent Pool have spent a lot of time experimenting with a vast array of different flavour combinations, picking the best ones to make their signature taste; handcrafted, multi-layered and bursting with complex flavours that evolve as you experience them.

Gin is a neutral spirit distilled from wheat, barley, potatoes or grapes. The flavours of a gin come from its botanicals with the predominant flavour being juniper. Gin must be at least 37.5% alcohol to be considered a real gin – otherwise, it would be considered a gin liqueur.

Silent Pool distils their spirit in a Holstein copper pot still powered by a vintage wood-fired steam boiler before rectification in a ten-foot column still.  The final spirit is around 90% abv before dilution to 43% with spring water from the local lake the distillery is named after.

I was sent their signature Silent Pool Gin. A Luxury handcrafted English gin made with a unique fusion of 24 botanicals including makrut lime, chamomile, local honey and lavender among others. It is described as being full-bodied, with a rich juniper-driven spirit, and fresh with clarity and depth of flavour. It has a subtle sweetness but is overall well balanced.

Can we also take moment to marvel at how beautiful the bottle is? It depicts the myth of the Silent Pool. It is said that a woodcutter’s daughter used to bathe in the Silent Pool and one evening she was spotted by a knight on horseback who tried to approach her. The woodcutter’s daughter retreated and fell into a deep part of the pool where she drowned.

Her father found her floating dead in the water. He also found the royal crest of Prince John, who later became King John the First of England on the bank of the pool. If you look at the pattern on the bottle and you’ll spot the woodcutter’s daughter, Prince John and a crown representing his royal crest amongst the botanicals.

Honestly, nothing makes me happier on a clear Spring or Summer evening than to relax with a fresh, uplifting gin and tonic. I have really enjoyed getting to know the Silent Pool flavours, I have found them to certainly be richer and stronger than other gins which makes it stand out among my collection.

If you’d like to try Silent gin for yourself, this is their recommended serve:
