Review: Contemporary Fashion Stylists

We were recently approached with a request to review a new book by publicity at Vivays Publishing Ltd. The book in question is Contemporary Fashion Stylists by Luanne McLean the self proclaimed Fashion & Beauty writer, stylist and blogger. Of course were were happy to review the new book!

Contemporary Fashion Stylists offers a great deal of information on the world of fashion styling. What does a stylist do? What do you need to know to be a fantastic stylist? These questions are explored and explained in this book.

As a starting point, a stylist must have a strong sense of colour and a flair for fashion. Communication skills and the ability to build relationships are absolutely essential; you need to be able to listen to the client and to interpret their brief to your team – Luanne McLean

The first thing that struck me with this book is the amazing collection of photographs, showing the styling of some incredible outfits in all sorts of creative ways which really is awe inspiring; with vibrant colours and stunning garments the imagery really captivated me.

I particularly enjoyed the chapter The Knowledge this chapter runs through the top practical tools, skills and know how required to be a successful stylist. Don’t know the basics of a styling kit? You will after reading this book. There are some really valuable tips in this section, for example – invest in some quality suitcases in order to better transport samples!

The profile section of this book offers an extensive portfolio of stylists, showing their work as well as contact details. There are 20 profiles of some of the most successful contemporary stylists of the day ranging across all sectors: from music to catwalks and red carpet events. Each of the profiles offers details about the stylist including their personal advice about the industry and how to get started in the business. It is really interesting to learn that most stylists have no formal training the area, but have picked up their invaluable skills through experience and determination.

A stylist essentially fulfils the brief of making their client look good, this often involves constructing outfits, altering and tailoring items for the perfect fit, customising clothes to make them more individual and even commissioning designers to to creative an item of clothing especially for their client. – Luanne McLean

I really enjoyed this book, not only does it give great information for anyone wishing to join the stylist career, but from my personal perspective, has given me some fantastic inspiration and a whole new perspective on fashion photography and presentation. I give this book a 4 out of 5 and congratulate our fellow blogger on her first book!
