How to Make the Most of a Small Bedroom
According to the latest census, 21% of people in UK and Wales live in a flat, maisonette or apartment where rooms are typically small and space is restricted. If you’re struggling to feel at home in your small bedroom, these thoughtful design choices can make a surprisingly big difference to how it looks and feels.
- Optimise the layout
How you arrange your furniture physically impacts the spaciousness of a room. Take time to assess how you move around the space, noting any tight areas, then focus on creating a clear flow around the bedroom, ensuring clear walkways.
Your bed should be against a solid wall, visible from but not directly opposite the door. Desks benefit from being close to natural light sources. Remember to consider door and drawer clearance when arranging cupboards and wardrobes. A simple floor plan drawn on paper can help you experiment with different arrangements before lifting heavy furniture.
Pay attention to any awkward corners too, where valuable space is often wasted. With the addition of shelves, alcoves can quickly be transformed into cosy reading nooks or additional storage.
- Manage your clutter
Clutter can make spaces of all sizes feel cramped and chaotic. Everyday items such as clothing, paperwork, chargers and toiletries occupy valuable surfaces and create visual noise that shrinks the room in your mind’s eye.
Rather than tackling the entire room at once, focus on one category at a time. Start with clothing, then move on to books, beauty products or accessories etc. As you sort, ask yourself whether you use each item regularly and whether it deserves space in the room. Creating clear piles, for keeping, donating or recycling, and binning, will help you stay organised as you go.
Use strategies to keep your belongings stored out of sight and separated. Having dedicated systems will help you stay tidy while keeping daily essentials easily accessible.
- Maximise your storage
Struggling to find a home for all your belongings? You’ll have more storage options than you might think, many of them hiding in plain sight.
Start with big changes, such as swapping traditional furniture for modern options like fitted wardrobes with customisable interiors that make the most of every inch of available space. Furniture with hidden storage, such as ottoman beds and benches, is another easy way to double the available space.
Wall space is commonly underused. Adding open shelves gives you more places to display decorations and keep everyday items while leaving the space beneath free for seating or more flexible storage. Hooks are a simple way to make use of free wall space, great for hanging dressing gowns and bags for soft belongings.
- Choose strategic furniture
The style of furniture you select matters just as much as the type you choose. Bulky pieces can quickly dominate a compact room, even if they offer useful storage, while slim designs naturally make the space feel more open. Furniture with visible legs allows you to see more of the floor underneath, visually expanding the area in comparison to pieces that sit at floor level.
For very small bedrooms, consider foldable furniture. This might include a pull-down desktop or a pack-out table and chairs. Having these pieces ensure your room meets your practical needs without creating permanent clutter.
- Increase the light
Light plays a major role in how spacious a room appears. Dark corners, dark paint colours and heavy window treatments can make even a reasonably sized bedroom feel enclosed.
Choose light-filtering curtains or blinds that allow natural daylight to enter while still maintaining privacy. Positioning a mirror opposite or adjacent to a window is a top tip, as it will reflect the natural light around the room to subtly increase brightness. Build a layered lighting system for the evenings, combining bedside lamps with dimmable ceiling lights for a softer more balanced effect.
Lighter wall colours can further enhance the sense of space. This soft neutrals and warm whites, or pale shades of blue which is considered the most restful colour for a bedroom.
