Chinese New Year with PingPong

I love Ping Pong restaurants (I especially loved their ‘pyjamas eat all you can’ promotion when everyone who turned up in their restaurant dressed in their night outfits could eat whatever they could from the delicious menu), so when I got chance to take part in a private celebration of the Chinese New Year held in their St Katharine’s Dock branch, I couldn’t be more excited.

As all of their restaurants I’ve visited, this one has a very stylish decor which, along with the dim light, created perfect background for the evening, that wasn’t short of attractions.

We were welcomed with the especially prepared for this occasion Spicy Guava Tea Party cocktails and everyone could try their finger behind the bar, mixing it with a professional cocktail master.

I love to watch the food I’m about to consume, so the fact that we could observe the chefs cooking in front of us only increased my cravings for the new Macanese-inspired menu.

Composed by David Wang, a multi-awarded chef from the Macau Culinary Association, the specials included Chinkiang Prawn Wrap, Spiced Pork Stew and Cod & Tudou Balls. However, my personal favourite were the vegetarian Pao cai and mushroom dumplings (cabbage, shiitake mushroom, carrot). I tried to learn how to make them during the dumpling making workshop and my results were quite impressive (the task wasn’t that hard once the dough and the filling were prepared by the professionals), my attempt to make it from scratch at home was far from perfection.

The other attraction of the night included Chinese calligraphy and a fortune teller. I am not a big fan of this but I have to admit that I had a good time having a chat with the man. It was very interesting to hear good tips and advice about my future life and what things to do and not to do to avoid disasters.

The lady doing the calligraphy was adorable and very friendly; I manage to get my name on Chinese and a lovely phrase to the one I love.

The event was very well organized and everyone had a good time, the hospitality of the people organizing the event was superb and very creative.

Thank you very much Ping Pong for the opportunity and we look forward to visit you again anytime soon.
