Review: The Old Crown Pub New Oxford Street

There’s nothing my husband and I enjoy more than going out and exploring London’s eateries – somewhere new on date night makes it an extra special evening out and it’s made unforgettable with fantastic food and service. When I was approached and asked to review* the Old Crown Public House on New Oxford Street I was very happy to accept.

A short walk from the British Museum, The Old Crown claims to be a hidden oasis of London Life, a venue away from the bustle of the west-end which has been voted one of London’s best burger joints in town. I have to admit it is hard not to agree with this statement – having walked in off the busy streets the atmosphere of The Old Crown is friendly with the lovely wooden furniture, leather upholstered chairs and booths and the dim lighting coming from a lovely chandelier making it feel very much like a traditional pub and offered customers a comfortable, stress free snug in which to enjoy their evening. My favourite interior feature was the ‘organ’ behind the bar, which really gave the pub something a bit different!

We were met by Dom who kindly showed us to our table which had been specially reserved for me – a lovely touch – and we ordered drinks, 2 ciders from the extensive menu of wine, beers and cocktails before browsing the menu. The Old Crown boasts Bespoke London dining serving award winning home-made burgers, hot dogs, wings, ribs other dishes from an American traditional bar food. theme but produced from British ingredients.

My default menu option going to a pub as a vegetarian is the trustworthy veggie burger – which was indeed present, however, more intriguingly there was a veggie hot dog which I felt I simply had to try! I hardly ever have hot dogs when eating out, so this was something special for me. At £7.95 the vegetarian hot dog is served with fried onions and melted cheese, I also decided to go for some zucchini (or courgette) fries and some onion rings. My meat-eating husband went for a huge rack of pork ribs served with BBQ flavours, chips & coleslaw, priced at £16.95.

When our food arrived we were stunned at just how amazing it looked – very generous portions of both dishes, with the ribs looking decidedly impressive arriving on a wooden board with roasted vine tomatoes on top, with the chips acting as a bed for the meat. My veggie dog was practically overflowing with delicious molten cheese and had a large bun attempting to contain it, the dog and the onions. Presentation was certainly exceptional, and then we tucked in and discovered the food was just as good.

My veggie hot dog was flavourful and not dry, which some veggie products can be, with the onions and cheese offering a traditional hot dog meal despite the lack of meat. My zucchini fries and onion rings were a little greasy, but nothing that I wasn’t happy to overlook due to their deliciousness! My husband really enjoyed his ribs which had a great BBQ flavour and were obviously from a quality source.

Overall we really enjoyed our night out at The Old Crown and we are awarding the establishment 5 stars for it’s fabulous atmosphere, exceptional food and fantastic  service which really made our night out one to remember. I whole heartily recommend a visit for anyone looking for a great meal and a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere.
