Where the sea meets the sky. Puglia. Part 1

Today I want to talk about something which belongs to me in the most intimate side, my homeland.

The south of Italy, and in particular Puglia, is a region of Italy which is still undiscovered and full of surprises to the most sceptical tourist it might think of going there. But anyway.

Since Ryanair (god bless) is now running through Puglia’s sky, it’s not difficult to reach in 2:30hours a place full of history and really beautiful.

I want to describe what I like most and therefore what I would suggest to visit, maybe while staying at a Bed and Breakfast near Brindisi airport and then rent a car.

I want to start from one of my favourite places: Alberobello. It’s a former Unesco town, quite small and very cosy, and its peculiarity is its houses which are called trulli (singular: trullo).

As you can see the shape of trulli is conoidal, with white walls and grey stoned roof which often displays magic signs from the local culture.

The atmosphere is magical there: there is no other place in the world where you can walk between those houses, and you get the impression of a timeless place, where time is literally in a standstill.

A little further south, towards Brindisi, there is another small town which is extremely cute: Ostuni.

So-called the white city, because of it’s made of only white houses, it stands on the top of a soft hill, which makes it fresher during the very hot summer in Puglia.

Ostuni, Italy

What I love of Ostuni is its narrow-middle-aged streets, full of small boutiques where you can buy all sorts of souvenirs and gadgets. And of course, I am not going to forget something else: the wine bars. If you like wine, Ostuni is the place. There is a roof-terraced wine bar where all the young people go and drink quality red or white wine at the notes of a classic guitar which it happens to be played around every so often.

It’s a place where you can easily fall in love with, where the sea is great too and its blue meets the sky.

In the next post I will explore this poetry in more detail.
