Review: Leaf Neon Sign from Neon87

Just before Covid, I decided to upcycle an old wooden storage unit into a bar and when I was doing the renovation I did a lot of research on how to make a bar exciting (a part from the bottles on it!). One of the main elements of decoration that came up was neon! They were popular back in the 1920s to 1950s.

At the time I didn’t think it would be possible to find an affordable and attractive neon piece to place on my bar so instead, I decided to use funky 1920’s wallpaper to give it some wow factor.

I work from home as a freelancer and I had to admit that sometimes I get really bored of staring at the same four walls where I have my desk. Don’t get me wrong, I have some nice artwork, plants and pets to keep me company, but sometimes I think that I would like to shake things up a bit and add something a bit funky to keep me entertained, so when Neon87 got in touch offering me the chance to review one of their neon signs I jumped at the chance.

Back in 2018 Neon87 introduced a brand new glass neon alternative to businesses all over the world and quickly established a reputation for high quality, fast turnaround, and creative design with many of the largest companies in the world. Since then Neon87 have opened a large UK based studio making most of their funky signs in house alongside a large international team of designers and craftspeople.

Glass, gas or traditional neon uses super high voltages to charge gas inside a glass tube to produce the light. Their LED Neon is made using super high quality LED strips with 120 diodes per meter. It is then encased in silicone during an extrusion process, turning the light from dots, into a long line. The LED version is a great choice due to durability, style, and price.

I was offered the chance to review one of their mini neon signs – perfect for smaller spaces. They come in a range of shapes, sizes and colours, so there’s bound to be one to suit your style, and despite their smaller size, they are super bright! I picked out the 33cmx 36cm neon monstera style leaf sign in purple, handmade in their Exeter UK factory.

The mini sign comes with everything you need to get started – including batteries, a 2-meter clear power cable coming from the bottom right of the sign, and an easy-to-follow set-up guide. I was also provided with double-sided sticky tabs to use to mount the sign on the wall. I wasn’t sure that they would hold the neon on the wall but I was pleasantly surprised to find that they were quick and simple to install and the sign has yet to fall down.

The sign is very tough and doesn’t need much maintenance but will get dusty. To clean, it’s recommended that you use a fresh microfibre cloth to wipe gently and take care of avoiding the wires as you may pull one loose.

I really love the vibe that the neon brings to my workspace and it makes a great Zoom background! I am tempted to have a go at using their amazing custom neon design option to make something I can use at my wedding next year.

I award the neon leaf sign from Neon87 5 out of 5 stars.
