Key fabric trends in 2016

trendy fabrics for 2016

When I browse the items in my wardrobe I sometimes forget that these are not just clothes, they are shapes formed out of fabric and sometimes I think that this fact gets forgotten in the excitement of fashion. Every season there are new shapes, styles and importantly materials which are designed and sculpted into beautiful garments, so today I want to give you the run down on key fabrics for 2016.

Don’t be a square

According to Adam Ross Fabrics geometric patterns are key this year with squares coming up on top having cropped up on coats, trousers shoes and jackets on the catwalks. I love fabrics with irregular square patchwork style patterns which were popular with designers but a more classic symmetrical pattern will always be a more sensible alternative. If you’re not sure about standing out in squares try adding a few subtle geometric accessories to hint at the trend.

Sheep are your friend

Who doesn’t love a fabulous chunky knit jumper or a warm wool coat for winter? Layering is a huge trend this year so make the most of versatile knit fabrics by wearing a knitted coat over a lovely knit jumper or cardigan of complimentary (or contrasting) patterns – perfect for the UK’s changeable weather! My favourite thing about knitted fabrics is the amazing range of textures which it comes in which really adds something to an outfit, from classic stockinette stitch and the popular ribbed pattern to more interesting stitches like moss and seed.

50 shades of…

Grey has seen a huge revival over the last year or so with interior design having brought it to my attention last Spring, inspiring me to paint my whole home a gorgeous pale grey which appeals to my modern and simple taste. This year grey is seeing a fabulous translation with the catwalks having been awash with shades of grey with the variety and neutrality of the colour making it so easy to wear and style for work or for a casual weekend look. Don’t be afraid to mix and match different shades of grey in the same outfit (try different textures for an eye catching look) or contrast it with a bright, bold colour for some Summer fun.

Rock 70s style

Recall those big fur collars in the 1970s sported by the likes of the character Del-Boy from ‘Only Fools and Horses’? This style is coming back (but better) as shearling (sheepskin), with wool on the inside of garments, looks to be big this year. Shearling can be made from real sheepskin or from synthetic fibres and is a great look for anyone who doesn’t want to follow outlandish trends but still be fashionable. Sheepskin will be seen on the inside of all your staples such as leather jackets and wool coats to keep you warm and snug this winter.

What are your favourite fabrics? How do  you like to wear them?
