Introducing Wave Artist Shaun Thomas

I have to admit that I don’t really have much art up in my house. It’s something that I would like to work on, adding some colour and style to my home so when I was introduced to Shaun Thomas, an artist who creates beautiful wood sculptures and contemporary art I wanted to share his talents with you.

Shaun Thomas’ wooden wave art is rooted in his passion for surfing and design. He uses clean lines, sharp edges and colour, creating captivating scenes within each piece. From small wood prints to oversized 3D wave sculptures, no two pieces are alike.

Born, raised and currently residing in Southern California, Shaun’s style has been influenced by his travels to countries such as Australia and travelling to surf destinations like Mexico, Nicaragua and Hawaii.

Having been inspired whilst restoring a 1968 mustang Shaun developed his own flare by designing my own gauges and added other customisations to his car. He moved onto building his own custom furniture, which spiked an interest with wood. The creativity caught like wildfire and Shaun began surrounding his home and environment with his own work which led him creating his own art.

Gallery Owner & Featured Artist
August 2018 – Current

In 2018, Shaun was inspired to open his own gallery. Having driven up and down the local orange county coast, he eventually stumbled upon a unique location in the beautiful downtown area of Laguna Beach, California.

After designing layout concepts and executing the full remodel to bring his vision to life, Shaun successfully created an environment, unlike the traditional galleries, with a uniquely experiential approach. You can really feel it from the moment you walk in the gallery. Thomas Studios has now become a must-see Laguna Beach Art Gallery.

Shaun is well travelled and spends his time out of the art studio in his own web studio, creating digital experiences for a range of clients. His clean lines and use of mixed media draw the viewer into masterfully crafted worlds, borne of his rich imagination.

To get inspired before he works on a piece, Shaun looks at a variety of imagery in magazines and on the web, picking apart different angles and sections from different photos. Once he decides he has a worthwhile concept he will produce a digital version, create multiple versions, mixing and matching them until he comes up with one that is worth bringing to life.

Shaun is picky about the wood selected for each piece. Once selected, the wooden shapes are cut out using a large scroll saw and then sanded down to a fine finish. The design is then taped off and different coloured dyes and toners are applied, keeping the beautiful wood grain as vibrant as possible.

I find Shaun’s 3D wooden wave art sculptures very appealing with their array of simplistic, minimalistic and zen-like 3D stained wooden wave art and coastal wall sculptures. A selection of his sculptures are also available as prints with ink injected wooden wave art scene prints on high-end grade 3/4″ white birch plywood. Each piece is unique with varying wood grain patterns.
