How to find your style for the new year

With the new year fast approaching, you may be beginning to think about ways you can improve your life and well-being.

Many women struggle with self-confidence and feeling confident in their clothes. The start of a new year gives you the opportunity to make changes surrounding this feeling. Here are some steps to help you rediscover your style and be the best version of yourself.

Have a clear-out

One negative trait that many people have is holding on to clothes that they no longer wear in the hopes that they will lose weight or find a way to wear them that feels comfortable.

If you take a weekend to go through your wardrobes and sort through your clothes you may find that you feel mentally lighter. Start by sorting your clothes into piles for keeping, donating and selling. Once you have done this, get the clothes you aren’t keeping out of the house quickly to prevent you from revisiting those piles.

Build the basics

You may have heard the term ‘capsule wardrobe’ but aren’t sure what that actually means. Having a capsule wardrobe means it is full of versatile pieces that can be matched with other items and make you feel great. By having a solid base of clothing, you will always have options and something to wear.

Start with your underwear. Many women wear the wrong bra size and that can contribute to body image issues. Get yourself measured and invest in some luxury bras. If you feel great in them, your confidence will exude outwards.

Get colour matched

Everyone has colours that they look better in, but sometimes certain shades can look better than others. Colour matching is where a professional helps you to decide on your seasonal palette. You may look better in cooler, wintry tones as opposed to warmer, summer tones.

Colour matching aims to help you to understand what looks best on you and help you to feel amazing. This will also help when shopping as you will know which colours to avoid before you even begin.

Go out of your comfort zone

It is normal to settle into one style or type of fashion, especially as you get older. But to truly ensure you have your personal style nailed down you should try out other styles as well.

Look at celebrities and people in the public eye whose style you admire. Although you probably don’t have a Hollywood budget, there are ways to emulate their style from the high street. Fashion magazines often have features on how to copy celebrity style on a realistic budget.

Once you have a capsule wardrobe, you can start to experiment with pieces outside of your normal wear. You could start small with bright or unusual accessories and build up to a bright jacket or matching different prints together. Remember, it is OK to change your mind on this journey – trial and error is the best way to find your personal style limits.
