How to create a stylish kitchen for your home

The kitchen is at the heart of most homes. It’s a place to catch up with the family, cook meals together and spend quality time with your loved ones. However, the kitchen shows signs of wear and tear much more quickly than in other rooms.

If your kitchen needs a little love and care, why not redesign the room altogether? You could change the floor plan to suit your lifestyle and make a few changes to make it more stylish. Kitchen renovations can be done on a wide range of budgets – from IKEA flatpack models to bespoke handmade designs. Here are a few ways you can transform your kitchen this summer.

Colour scheme

Create a modern and spacious colour scheme with a neutral colour palette. Remove any outdated colours and patterns and replace them with bright whites to welcome the light back into the room. Make sure to test out any paint swatches on the wall throughout the day to see how the colour fairs with the natural light in the room. Red and green kitchens are also popular right now – you could incorporate a little colour with a statement wall or painted cupboards.

Cookware and equipment

Every kitchen needs a stylish yet functional pan set that the whole family can use for cooking. Updating your kitchen appliances is a great way to add a modern twist to an otherwise dated kitchen. You could add a different element to your kitchen aesthetic with copper utensils. Or compliment your Scandinavian minimalist kitchen with some classic stainless-steel appliances that will never go out of style.

Kitchen plan

Your kitchen needs to flow and work with you and your family. For example, a breakfast bar may work if you have older children who need a space to do their homework and eat. An open planning living space works well with big families as you can hang out together while one cooks, watches TV, and works at the kitchen table. Consider the shape of your kitchen and how you can fit the different elements together. Draft up a floor plan and mark the location of each unit, such as the fridge, kitchen cabinet and dining table. You could hire a designer if you feel out of your depth and need an expert opinion.

Accessories

You don’t want to clutter your kitchen surfaces with letters, car keys and miscellaneous items. Make sure to incorporate a junk drawer into your kitchen design, so there is a designated place for all these things. Make sure you consider ‘boring’ items like bins! Did you know you should have 4 bins for effective waste management? You should also add a few art installations and ornaments to add personality to space.

Your kitchen should reflect your family’s lifestyle and character – whether it’s through the design or finishing touches.
