Gift ideas for a new mother

Gift ideas for a new mother

I am at that age now that a few of my friends are starting their families which is really exciting. As we don’t have any children ourselves (yet!) it is a fascinating education experience meeting up with the new parents and their babies and getting to ask questions. Of course being a new mummy or daddy is hard work and I always feel like I want to bring them something, a small gift or token, and sometimes it is hard to decide what to bring. Although flowers and a bottle of wine might be appropriate to bring to pre-baby, what makes a good post-baby gift?

Baby Supplies

Mums need to buy all sorts of gadgets, toys, and tools to adapt to the new baby. Car seats, baby wipes, a stroller (Mixx have some great ones), and all sorts of necessities will need to get taken care of. It’s no surprise that one of the most common things to buy new parents are baby supplies. Of course all these things can get expensive so make sure to shop around or even check out these awesome Groupon Discount Codes for Mothercare so you can maximize what you get the new mum.

I have to admit that I really love the trend of nappy cakes – a collection of practical everyday baby products arranged in such a way to look like a cake. These cakes come in different colours and sizes but usually include items such as nappies (of course), baby blankets, muslin cloths, an assortment of baby clothing (socks, mittens, bibs, hats). You can also get extra goodies in the bigger cakes such as photo albums, baby record book, hand and foot print chart and trinket boxes. Check out the selection at Amazon for inspiration.

Baby Keepsakes

Bring a new mum is so special and although it is obviously hard work time might pass faster than they realise and soon baby is crawling and then walking. Give them something to remember their first few months with baby with a lovely keepsake. I really love this baby hand and foot inkless print kit which gives parents the chance to create something personal to their bundle of joy so they can look back at the days when their newborn was so tiny!

Milestones are so important to measure baby’s development – first steps, first words etc. Give your new mum friend something to help her record these magical moments with a set of milestone cards which feature all the major milestones. They can be filled in with the date and mummy or daddy can capture the moment by taking a photo of baby with the card to create the perfect baby keepsake.

Help Out

Sometimes you don’t have to spend money to give a new mum something she cherishes. Baby will take up a lot of time and small things such as having a uninterrupted shower, taking a nap or cooking a hot meal will go out of the window as the little one requires round the clock attention. Why not offer to babysit while mum gets a well deserved break or send her out for a massage or hair cut to let her decompress.

Many mums say that the best gift they have received from family members were prepared meals which could be frozen and popped in the microwave when required ensuring that mum and dad have nutritious meals which they don’t have to prepare themselves. How about doing a batch of clothes washing or ironing to help out? Sometimes the simple things you can offer your new parent friend will make the biggest difference.
