Getting Crafty: Crochet throw & blanket

As part of my get crafty New Years Resolution I have been working on a few different crochet projects as of late. I am so bad at actually finishing a project – I make a start but then never bring the whole thing together. A great example of this would be my 2 most recent projects: a throw and a blanket.

As you might be able to tell from the below photos I love granny squares – one of the building blocks of crochet. Starting with a circle of crochet stitches and building the pattern out into multiple layers you can make a square – make enough squares and you can make anything by stitching them together.

A year or so ago I started thinking about making a cosy crochet blanket out of lots of little granny squares – with a purple/blue colour scheme. I went ahead and bought the yarn and spent hours making lots of granny squares from lilac, baby blue, white and a deep purple and kept them in a big bag altogether. I then, unfortunately, forgot about them until recently. Having uncovered the bag of squares I decided to go for it and complete the project – it was a simple case of stitching the squares together using a single crochet stitch in a shiny white yarn, bringing all the components together to create my cosy blanket after all!

I really love browsing all the different yarns available both in shops and online and when I came across a range of colourful yarns in John Lewis I just had to buy one of each of them. Obviously, what else would I do but make each ball of yarn into a big giant square? So, as per usual, I created all the granny squares from the multi coloured yarns and then promptly put them in a bag and forgot about them! Digging them out recently I decided to stitch them together with a lovely lilac yarn to make a throw which we now have on the back of our rather red sofa which is also decorated with a pair of owl cushions* from B&Q which my husband and I received at a press day last year.

I hope you like my crafty creations, I will be featuring more of my crafty projects as I progress with my get crafty resolutions.
