Organising Your Home Like a Pro

With busy lives and the accumulation of things over a lifetime, or sometimes just on a weekend shopping trip, it is all too easy to become overwhelmed by your belongings. Change your approach to how you organise your home and keep the things you enjoy by following these practical tips.
Store Things Off-Site
Sometimes, you have more material items than you know what to do with, and they are taking up too much space in your home, but you cannot bear to part with them. Perhaps a beloved family member passed away and left you their beautiful furniture set, or maybe you are in a transition phase in life and need to keep your belongings secure for a while.
Regardless of the reason, self storage is the solution to your problem. Placing important items in a secure self storage facility instead of piling them precariously in the garage or asking your mum to keep them means you can access items whenever you are ready, and your home will be more organised.
Create a Landing Zone
Most homes have an entry that opens directly into the main room or a stairwell. The luxury of a mudroom does not exist for many people. If this is your home situation, do not despair. You can create a landing zone at each entrance. All you need is some creativity and motivation.
Start by adding a long, narrow shelf just above a chair rail or at counter height. Place hooks underneath it to hang hats, bags, jackets, dog leashes, etc. Set fashionable baskets on top of the shelf to hold your keys, sunglasses, and the post. Rest a small umbrella stand and a slim vertical shoe rack underneath the narrow shelf. Put a chair or small bench nearby, and you have just created a functional yet stylish landing zone to keep your belongings in check.
Put Everything in Its Place
If your organisation habits and practices are lacking, that is okay. You can always implement new strategies to put order into the place you call home. Start by changing how you handle items you bring into the home. Deal with the post immediately after collecting it. File, shred, or place letters in a to-do pile instead of letting them languish on the entry console.
Look at each room and assess the space. Can you utilise drawers or shelves more efficiently? Would it help to have a chair in your bedroom where you can toss clothing whilst trying to decide what to wear instead of piling it on the floor? Consider how you currently do things around the house and determine whether or not they are efficient and effective. Rethink your approach and find creative solutions to keep things organised. And remember: When you are finished with something, always put it away.
