Family Fun in Belfast

Belfast isn’t just for grownups. A bold statement, you might think, but I have come to realise that Northern Ireland’s capital and largest city has a lot to offer to young explorers looking to have fun and learn a little something.

Travel is great for children for so many reasons: presenting them with new opportunities for learning, developing their curiosity and driving their sense of adventure, encouraging them to grow in confidence, and to become more adaptable and responsible. That being said family trips can also be a nightmare! Check out this great article for 7 Tips For A Stress-Free Family Holiday.

Here are my recommendations for any family visiting Belfast this year.

Belfast Zoological Gardens

If you have a family that loves animals then the Belfast Zoological Gardens is the place for you. With more than 1,000 animals and 150 species, Belfast Zoo is now a leading and award-winning attraction in Northern Ireland. Don’t miss out on seeing the Californian sea lions, Malayan Tapirs, Giant Anteaters and Rothschild’s giraffes.

The Giant’s Causeway

One of Ireland’s best known attractions, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a magnificent geological formation steeped in myth and legend. The Causeway creates the jagged headland of neatly packed basalt columns pointing towards Scotland which visitors are welcome to walk along (there is also a shuttle bus available). Said to be the home of the giant Finn McCool who lived nearly two thousand years ago, this is a magical family attraction where you can learn about the Irish coastline, the wildlife and thrill children with interactive exhibitions and stories of monsters.

Aunt Sandra’s Candy Factory

Take a trip back in time with Aunt Sandra at this candy wonder world where you can watch the production process for all manner of chocolates and sweets – not forgetting a cheeky sample or two as you go along! You and the family can enjoy the sights and smells of old-time candy making in this quaint factory. Make your own chocolate pizzas and lollipops – with prizes for the most creative masterpiece.

The Clearsky Adventure Centre

Last, but not least, is the Clearsky Activity Centre – made famous by the filming of Game of Thrones on its site – which includes an amazing medieval courtyard and castle clock tower as well as offering numerous exciting activities. Jump on a speed boat, hone your archery skills or try your hand at abseiling. Games of Thrones fans will get the chance to tour the filming locations with the Centre’s Game of Thrones Filming Location Cycle Tours, with or without costumes! With activities scheduled throughout the year and family discounts often available this is a great venue for any adventurous youngsters (and adults!)
