The Re-Launch of Generator Hostels London

Recently Generator Hostels was proud to re-launch their London location off Tavistock Place. Originally opened in August 1995, with the building having been built in the 1940-50s.

Generator Hostels claim to have a range of jet-setting, uber hostels for those who want to have a great time travelling without worrying about expensive accommodation. With eight locations across the Europe; all designed with  the traveller in mind from my outrageous interiors in Copenhagen to cocktails in Dublin, Generator Hostels offer a  boutique experience with good value.

The recently restyled and refurbished Generator London, originally a police section house, has been worked on by Anwar Mekhayech from DesignAgency (Toronto, Canada) in partnership with ORBIT Architects with the concept of the “City as an Event” – which includes taking inspiration from layers of history, styles and designs are uncovered and collected within one location, including eclectic cultural, architectural, stylistic, and historical combinations from all areas of London life.

Throwing in some quirkiness each of the Hostel floors have been named after a popular fictional English character such as Austin Powers, Dr Who, James Bond, Mary Poppins, Ali G, Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland with their images featuring in the décor. Tiered lounge seating, a screening area and game tables provide that all important relaxed social experience for those who find themselves in the Hotel lounge not forgetting The café offering tasty dishes on the all day menu.

The general feel from the newly refurbished Generator London is  one of industrial modernism with a combination of energy, function and affordability all mixed in with furniture from Moooi, Moroso or Tom Dixon. It was important to represent locality in the build the the interior art installations and graphics coming from Shoreditch based art collective Acrylicize in collaboration with the Design Agency. It is always nice to see companies who work hard to represent the feel real of their location – I think, particularly important for those in the travel industry.

Not forgetting that Good Wives and Warriors created the customised Generator piano in the café and Jenni Sparks is the mind behind the hand drawn map of London map that decorates the Travel shop.

Generator London boasts 868 beds from dorm beds at £12 per person to private rooms from £24.50 per person. For more information visit their website.
