Review: Wroxham Barns Chutney

I recently spent the weekend with my sister in Great Yarmouth and during our stay we spent a few hours shopping at Wroxham Barns which boasts a number of shops including The Pantry which stocks an impressive range of local produce including preserves, wines, beers, jams, sauces, chutneys and relishes.

Any foodie would find themselves in a bit of a whirlwind upon entering The Pantry with wall to wall tasty treats on display! I settled upon 2 different products to try, a mango chutney and a caramelised red onion chutney which I could test both in recipes or as an accompaniment to cheese or similar.

Both of these chutneys are classics in their own right – and I was happy to discover that The Pantry had stuck closely to the traditional recipes. My favourite has to be the red onion, a great match for ploughman’s lunch or as a relish for BBQ goodies such as burgers and sausages. The contrast of a sharp onion tang alongside the sweetness of the caramelised sugar in the chutney makes this a perfect accompaniment for a cheese like cheddar.

The mango chutney makes both a great ingredient as well as a condiment in it’s own right. It’s easy to bring added depth to a dish by marinading elements in this chutney such as sausages (meat or even Quorn). This chutney has a bit of spice and goes well with a stilton.

I really enjoyed these 2 chutneys and would certainly recommend that anyone visiting Norfolk should try to drop into Wroxham Barns and explore the shops for local produce. I give them a 4 out of 5 stars for being delicious and offering an easy way to make a meal a little more exciting!
