Review: The Phoenix

Seeking a shelter from the rampaging shoppers in Central London, my sister and I recently came across The Phoenix pub in Cavendish Square. Just out of the mad rush off Oxford Street this pub offers a bolt-hole for anyone seeking refuge and a tasty bit of lunch.

The interior of the pub feels like a comfy snug with dark wood and worn leather furniture. Offering plenty of seating you can choose from sitting on high tables or on the sofas. We picked a sofa table combination in the corner of the pub with a great view across the bar area. We settled down at our table before ordering our drinks. The Phoenix offers an extensive range of speciality beverages, I chose a Brothers Cider (cider is definitely my drink, particularly fruit cider) whereas by slightly hungover sister chose a simple coke – which arrived in a real glass bottle, a novelty these days!

For our starter we went for the mozzarella fondue – melted cheese with delicate bread portions to dip into the warm gooey goodness. I am a cheese addict, so this was particularly attractive on a cold British autumnal day (I actually kept some of the fondue to dip my chips in later!)

We couldn’t not have the fantastic burgers for our main courses – I had the Lentil & spinach burger topped with hummus and my sister went for the Mature cheddar cheese burger both with fries. My burger was very tasty with the lentil and spinach patty being flavoursome and not too dry which some veggie burgers can be, it was accompanied by salad, fries and some spicy mayonnaise dip. My sister informed me that her burger was smoky, spicy and delicious.

The atmosphere and service in the Phoenix was lovely, our waiter was very friendly and happy to chat a bit whilst setting down our dishes and the snug ambiance was a welcome calm from the storm of central London. This characterful public house offers a lovely experience with fantastic food, great service and with the best location for the shopping weary.  This pub gets a 4 out of 5 in my books! Well done!
