Review: Lunch at The Mill Salisbury

review
On my recent camping trip in Salisbury with my family we wandered into town on Market Day and did a fair bit of retail therapy – having walked around the market for some time we decided to look for a place to have some lunch before returning to the camp site. We hadn’t noticed The Mill before, but when we spotted it’s lovely exterior we decided to try it out.

Set in a beautiful riverside 18th Century building on a site owned by the Bishop of Old Sarum the pub was originally known as Bishops Mill (it was rebuilt by Salisbury’s founder – Bishop Richard Poore).  Reborn as simply the Mill – this pub is now one of Salisbury’s most popular pubs, mainly because of the lovely riverside location, seasonal menu, great wines and real ales. Having arrived with the dogs in tow, we chose a seat outside in the sunshine but  I peeked inside and noticed that it in fact has two stories and is almost impossibly large on the inside!

Wanting a simple lunch we settled on burgers all round – I had the vegetarian ‘skinny’ (without bun and extra salad) burger with chips, my husband had the beef ‘skinny’ burger and chips and my parents had a beef burger with extra bacon and cheese (decidedly not the skinny option!).

The meat eaters seemed happy with their meal, although the burger might have been a bit too cooked for my husband who prefers medium. I really liked that the chips with the non-skinny burgers came in little buckets – it certainly added a little character! My veggie burger was good, surprisingly moist – made with mozzarella and basil.  The chips were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside and the salad was a refreshing balance to an otherwise quite heavy meal.

We also enjoyed great service, with a lady coming out to offer our dogs water without us asking, They seemed quite happy to sit in the sun and snooze while we ate our food.

I am awarding The Mill in Salisbury 4 out of 5 stars for it’s tasty, good value, food and it’s lovely atmosphere and surroundings. I will certainly be returning again to try out the rest of their menu!
