Review: Good and Proper Tea Company Sourdough Crumpet

At the end of last year my work moved to a new office in the shiny and new Bower Building, situated on London’s Old Street Roundabout. Since moving I have tried to explore the area to find the best food and drink options for breakfast and lunch because from time to time I like to treat myself to something a bit new and different.

Having started from humble beginnings in London’s famous Borough Market, the Good and Proper Tea Company began in a 1974 Citroën-H van transformed into a mobile brew bar by founder Emilie with the help of a number of crowd-funding investors.  Selecting teas from farms and cooperatives around the world, always looking for something special, the Good and Proper Tea Company now not only boasts the fantastic tea van but their first shop.

Having walked passed the signage for the Good and Proper Tea Company shop a number of times, which also recently moved in to the Bower Building, I decided to check out their website and discovered their range of teas as well as their menu of foodie sourdough crumpets! I decided I simply had to pay them a visit in order to purchase some matcha tea (having developed a bit of a craving for it recently), and to try one of their amazing sounding crumpets.

The Good and Proper Tea company offer a selection of toppings for their home-made sourdough crumpets which come in a generously sized squares. On the chilly morning I visited I decided to try the cheddar cheese and onion jam crumpet and watched in awe as the crumpet was warmed on a hot plate before the toppings added and finished with a low torch! It was popped into a lovely cardboard take-away box so I could easily carry it away with me to the office to consume.

Having never tried a sourdough crumpet before I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was delighted to find a thick and sumptuous texture with a slightly more yeasty flavour than regular crumpets. The classic combination of a bold cheddar and a sweet onion jam was a perfect topping for the crumpet and certainly gave my morning a boost (along with the matcha latte I made for myself).

I look forward to returning soon for another tasty breakfast treat! I award the Good and Proper Tea Company Sourdough Crumpet 5 out of 5 stars and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a delicious and satisfying treat.
