Review: Genius Free From Crumpets

Weekends are a great excuse to try something different for breakfast. You don’t have to rush out the door to get to work, so take it easy! I recently decided to try something new for a weekend treat: crumpets, but not your average crumpet, these were grain-free crumpets from Genius.

As my husband is unable to eat most grains I have been looking into free from products which he can enjoy as an alternative. A few months ago a friend of ours introduced us to the Genius range and since then we have been eagerly testing out their range.

I have fantastic memories of toasting crumpets at my parents’ house in the winter where they had an open fire. Simply stab a crumpet onto the toasting fork and have at it! We used to have all sorts of topping options which made it fun and delicious!

The crumpets are wheat, dairy and gluten free, with the major ingredients being rice flour, maize starch and potato starch. They come in a handy packet of 4 and can be found in most big supermarkets – I got these from Sainsburys.

Of course I wanted my crumpets warm, so I popped them in the microwave for a couple of minutes. Of course you can go all out with toppings from simple butter to sweet jams and spreads and even savoury options like cheese! I choose to drizzle them with some delicious Canadian amber maple syrup from We Love Maple.

I was impressed at the taste and texture of the crumpets, despite being wheat, dairy and gluten free they had a nice taste and a texture not too unlike the original version. I did find that they were more crumbly and a little drier than regular crumpets, but that did not get in the way of my enjoyment especially with the maple syrup to balance it out.

I think these are a great option for any free-from person, and make a tasty breakfast or snack any time of day. I award the Genius Free From Crumpets 4 out of 5 stars and look forward to eating them again soon.
