Recipe: Easy Homemade Wholemeal Bread

During the lock down lots of people have been cooking and baking more from scratch due either to the lack of items on the shelves or simply to give them something to do whilst stuck inside.

I decided to try and make my own bread as it had been a while since I last made bread and I happened to have some bread flour and yeast in the cupboard.

Making bread doesn’t have to be complicated. This is a quick, simple recipe which will let you make a tasty loaf within a couple of hours and will give you great bragging rights!

Ingredients

  • 270ml warm water
  • 3 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 2 tbsp golden syrup (or runny honey)
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 500g strong wholemeal bread flour
  • 1 1/2 fast-action dried yeast

Method

  • Put flour, salt and yeast in a large bowl and mix.
  • Add syrup/honey, oil and water and combine to make a soft, sticky dough.
  • Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes.
  • Shape the dough and place in a greased tin, cover with clingfilm and leave to prove slowly until it has doubled in size. I proved mine in my oven at a very low temperature – around 30°C – for 45 mins but it could have had longer.
  • Add your chosen toppings/ glaze – I glazed mine with some plant milk – and place in an oven preheated to 220°C and immediately turn the heat down to 200°C and bake for 30 minutes. When cooked the loaf should sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Enjoy!
