Britain’s Top Market Towns

If you are like me and enjoy a staycation from time to time rather than jetting aboard then you have probably discovered at least one of Britain’s top market towns which offer a huge variety of goods in a quirky, fun atmosphere which you just can’t get at a shopping mall or supermarket. My favourite market towns are those which are rich which history and have a story or two to tell, so let me share my favourite ones with you.

Salisbury Market

Run twice-weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays (except for the third Tuesday in October due to another event), the Charter Market is made up of around 90 stalls offering a wide range of products from hog roast, pizza and Thai food to jewellery, clothes, pet food and collectibles. My favourite stall is The Olive Tree with their range of deli olives being my guilty pleasure. Learn more here.

Bury St Edmunds Market

Well known for its market, Bury St Edmunds has one of the most successful traditional street markets in the country. It has a long and colourful history, dating back to the days of William the Conqueror and has had several configurations including provisions, a corn market, a livestock market as well as a fish market. Stalls include vegetables, clothes, flowers, seafood and shoes as well as other speciality goods. The Christmas Fayre is always popular, so be sure to visit towards the end of the year for a festive theme. Learn more here.

Harrogate Market

Held on the second Thursday of every month the Harrogate’s Farmer’s Market is a shining example of Yorkshire produce. You can purchase breads, jams, eggs, cheese, meat and fish direct from the producers who are always happy to discuss their wares, offer you samples to test and help you pick out the best purchase for you. Sometimes there are extra attractions such as prize draws and joint promotions as well as live performances from local bands to add to the frivolity of your market experience.

I have to admit that browsing through stalls of fresh, local produce is one of my favourite things to do when I am visiting one of Britain’s market towns. Markets are a proud part of England’s heritage and I believe it’s important to keep up this tradition – so if you are a foodie, or just someone who loves to shop, I wholly recommend the experience!
