3 ways to liven up oatmeal

One of the most comforting breakfasts to have in the colder months is oatmeal. This whole-grain breakfast made from rolled oats or steel-cut oats has been a hearty and nutritious favourite for generations. Although I do enjoy oatmeal I have to admit that having the same thing every day can get a bit boring, so why not liven up your morning oatmeal with these tasty ideas?

Blueberry Cheesecake Swirl

Who doesn’t love cheesecake? This is a fantastic way to combine your regular oatmeal with a classic dessert for added fun! Make your oatmeal as you usually would, add 1/4 tsp of cinnamon and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract and take off the heat. Mix 1.5 tablespoons of cream cheese with 1/4 tsp vanilla and blend with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Place your oatmeal in a bowl, top with the cream cheese and add 1/2 cup of blueberries and mix! You will end up with a comforting oatmeal laced with ribbons of sweet, creamy cheesecake!

Pumpkin Pie Oatmeal

At this time of the year, nothing beats incorporating classic pumpkin pie flavours into your breakfast. Make your oatmeal as you usually would before adding 30g pumpkin puree, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon and 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg and stir. You could also add 1/2 teaspoon of ground cardamom for an extra spice boost. Garnish 64g of chopped pecans and a generous drizzle of maple syrup.

Nutella Oatmeal

If you love chocolate with your breakfast then I have good news, there is an easy way to combine your favourite chocolate and hazelnut spread in this oatmeal combo. You need only make your oatmeal as you usually do then turn the heat off and add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder and 3 tablespoons of Nutella. Mix until creamy and fully combined! If you feel a bit guilty about having chocolate at breakfast add some fresh fruit such as sliced banana, strawberries and kiwi and place on top.

Sliced Apple and Peach Oatmeal

If you’re a fan of fruit at breakfast then this apple and peach oatmeal is for you. First, dice up 2 apples and 2 peaches and set to the side. Prepare your oatmeal as you usually would do and when at the correct texture throw in the fruit and stir. Once the fruit is nicely combined add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of allspice, 1/8th teaspoon of cloves and 1/8th teaspoon of salt and stir well. To serve, add a splash of milk and a drizzle of maple syrup!

Carrot Cake Oatmeal

There is something so comforting and warming about a spiced carrot cake, so why not add it to your breakfast? Prepare your oatmeal as you usually would, once boiling add 100g of shredded carrots, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, 1/4 teaspoon of ginger, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, and 2 tablespoons of raisins. Once combined let the oatmeal simmer until the extra liquid is absorbed and serve with an extra drizzle of maple syrup on top.
