Garden Lighting Trends & Tips

lighting trends

Garden lighting is getting better and cheaper with many battery operated and solar options available on the market so you need not worry about extension cords! The key is to keep outdoor lighting soft, subtle and selective by avoiding lighting up the whole space or making the space too bright; the trend this year is soft lighting perfect when you’re entertaining friends with a BBQ or just relaxing in your hammock. With that in mind, here are some top garden lighting trends and tips.

Fairy lights

If you don’t have much time to set up for your outdoor shindig then consider some quick and easy fairy lights to make your illuminate garden space making it more enticing. Fairly lights give off a soft warm glow which is in keeping with the soft-light trend for the season. There are many ways to use fairy lights to get an attractive look; Festive Lights recommends wrapping them around trees or draping along fences for an instant atmosphere lift. I love using battery operated LED fairy lights in hurricane lamps for an effective lighting solution which is easy to move around the garden.

Smart garden lighting

I can’t wait to add smart lighting to my home, so why not add it to my outdoor space as well? I have to admit that I am sometimes lazy and the idea of creating a cosy atmosphere at the press of a button or the swipe of a finger is just too good to ignore!  Smart garden lighting means you have full control over your outdoor illuminations so you can set the mood for any occasion using a multitude of options from colour-changing spotlights to fun ground lights for real impact.

Feature lighting

It is always best to highlight any key features in your garden for maximum atmosphere and effect. Every garden needs a focal point, whether that’s a uplighting a vast tree, interspersing an interesting rockery with ground lights, or even hanging fairy lights across a brick face of a building. LED light-up planters, floor lamps, and solar-powered light-up tables are all great examples of feature lights that can add a touch of ‘wow-factor’ to any space and accentuate the parts of your garden that give it character whilst drawing it all together seamlessly.

Solar lighting

Solar lighting has taken impressive strides forwards in recent years in terms of the technology and range of products available. They are perfect for the eco-conscious, working by absorbing the sun’s energy during daylight hours and emitting the light after sundown. They are free to run and are also easy to install as there’s no need to plug them in. Solar lights can act as both functional and decorative; spike lights work well to highlight plants and borders whereas a string of solar-powered lights draped from tree branches can create a magical atmosphere.
